Introduction to Biological Products

Jolly Farmer offers a range of biological products that are rich in beneficial microbes for your soil and crops. Beneficial microbes have been found to improve the health and productivity of soil and crops in many parts of the world as well as to reduce the need for chemical inputs. Following is a
simple summary of what beneficial microbes are and some of the benefits seen from
having these friends to help us.

What are beneficial microbes?
These are microscopic organisms in the soil that decompose residues, cycle nutrients in the soil, build soil structure and organic matter, and work synergistically with the roots of plants. They hold nutrients in the soil and then release them when needed, and can even, indirectly, discourage pests. Sound like a large job? Yes, it is a large job, but these organisms are perfectly suited with an enormous genetic diversity and can do an effective job if their needs are taken into account.

Why do we need to pay attention to what we can't see?
The unseen life in the soil is vital to our existence. This is what is meant by the "soil foodweb". In one way or another, all that we do with the soil is either enhancing the lives of these unseen workers, or it is making their life tough or impossible. Unfortunately, during the Green Revolution of the last century, the importance of these organisms was largely overlooked, and consequently lots of damage has been inflicted on our friends below ground. Cheap fertilizers and the promise of higher yeilds lured many farmers to change their practices. In addition to this, many farms have been simplified with only one or two main crops being grown, reducing the diversity of each individual farm. Now public awareness is rising that chemicals can be harmful in the environment and for our health. Added to this is the fact that chemical prices are going up and up, creating a real need to re-look at how we treat our underground work force.

How can Jolly Farmer help?
As you take a look through our catalog, you will see that many of our products address these concerns in a variety of ways. We are also developing technical bulletins for specific conditions and requirements. It is important to remember that a biological product is part of a whole program. Over-tilling, over-use of pesticides and fertilizers, compaction, or poor selection of fertilizers can adversely affect the microbial life. For this reason we have a Soil Foodweb Advisor here on staff who can help to answer your questions and guide you in integrating a more biological system.
