EARTHWORM CASTINGS Certified Organic by MCOG |
|
|
Our earthworm castings are from earthworms that are fed a diet that contains no manure and no post-consumer waste products with the exception of some shredded cardboard or paper as a component of the bedding. The earthworms are raised in a controlled environment with no contact to outdoor soil. |
WHY USE CASTINGS INSTEAD OF REGULAR COMPOST?
Here are several reasons to choose our earthworm castings: |
Earthworm Castings are odorless,
coffee grounds-like particles
produced by earthworms.
|
- They can be spread uniformly and the small particle size disappears rapidly down between the blades of grass when used on turf. Very little if any unsightly mess is left, since it is a finely screened product.
- The earthworms have naturally encapsulated the compost as it passes form their bodies. This provides an excellent source of slow release nutrition.
- The earthworms make the nutrients much more available to the plant.
- Our earthworm castings are a rich source of biology including large amounts of beneficial fungi, protozoa and nematodes.
- Castings are a uniform product made under specialized conditions including uniform, high-quality feedstocks.
- Excellent way to add biology that will help to loosen up packed or hardpan soils.
- Excellent source of bio-available calcium.
- Will not burn the roots of even the the most tender plants.
- Hold 2-3 times their weight in water, thus adding water holding capacity to porous or sandy soils.
- Increase seed germination. When mixed with sand and seed in a divot mix, they can help to make the grass germinate faster.

HOW DO I SPREAD CASTINGS?
A lime spreader or a standard top-dresser work well. Smaller spreaders can work well, but may require some modification. For small area applications, castings can be spread using something as simple as a push broom (see photo to the left).
RECOMMENDED APPLICATION RATES AND TIMING?
Rate of application depends on your purpose and nutrient requirements. Rates generally range from 1-2 metric tonnes/hectare (1/2 - 1 US ton per acre) per year depending on individual needs. This can be applied all at once or, on greens where turf is very short, it can be applied in several smaller doses to avoid build up on the mower rollers etc.
For a divot or topdressing mix, use a 20-30% inclusion rate of worm castings with sand.
|
|
| |
WILL IT CAUSE A PROBLEM WITH DIRT PILES ON MY TURF? No. The The kinds of worms we use to produce the castings do not draw piles of soil particles to the surface of their burrow. Even if a few worms are inadvertently mixed into the castings, they would not cause any problems in this regard.
WILL THIS REPLACE SOME OR ALL OF MY CURRENT FERTILIZER PROGRAM? Depending on the specific case, rate of application, and particular needs, earthworm castings can help reduce your fertilizer requirements substantially.
HOW ARE THE CASTINGS PACKAGED? Retail-ready bags of 5 L or 10 L. Grower bags of 56 L or 60 cu ft (pallet-size bulk bag.) |
Golf Course customers report...
Excellent addition to a divot mix:
Bentgrass germinated almost twice as fast as a regular sand mix and filled the divot sooner.
Helped restore damaged collars.
Useful for topdressing and overseeding areas suffering from winter kill.
Reduced compaction on tees and other high traffic areas.
